The Little Goats Room (4–6 years) is where children take their final steps before school, developing the confidence, independence, and skills they need for the next stage of their learning journey. Each day, children participate in our school readiness program, working in small groups on early literacy and numeracy, self-help skills, and exploring topics of interest that build knowledge together across the year.
While older children focus on preparing for school, younger children in the room also take part in group times around the same themes, with experiences tailored to their age and stage of development. Educators place a strong focus on social and emotional learning, giving children the tools to recognise, understand, and work through their emotions. This builds resilience, empathy, and confidence important skills not just for school, but for life.
The routine in this room is more structured to help prepare children for the transition to school, while still being flexible to meet individual needs. Children are given greater independence and responsibilities, such as caring for their own belongings and tending to the vegetable garden. Educators maintain open and ongoing communication with families about each child’s progress, while also building strong connections with local primary schools to ensure a smooth and supported transition.
